MD 97 AT THE CARROLL/HOWARD COUNTY LINE TO CLOSE APRIL 15-22 FOR RAILROAD REPAIRS

CSX Scheduled to Make Railroad Crossing Improvements; Motorists Encouraged to Allow Extra Commute Time

(April 8, 2019) – Starting at 9:00 a.m. Monday, April 15, CSX Transportation will temporarily close MD 97 (Old Washington Road) at the railroad crossing north of I-70 at the Carroll/Howard County line. The closure will allow CSX Transportation to improve the rail crossing and the ride quality for more than 10,000 motorists that use this section of MD 97 each day.

Both directions of MD 97 will close at the CSX crossing north of I-70. Through traffic on MD 97 will be detoured as follows:

  • For traffic heading north on MD 97, motorists will be directed to Old Frederick Road to Woodbine Road to MD 26 (Liberty Road) back to MD
  • For traffic heading south on MD 97, motorists will be directed to MD 26 to Woodbine Road to Old Frederick Road back to MD 97

Variable message signs, temporary signs, and barrels will be in place to guide motorists of through the detour route.

Those who have questions about traffic operations along MD 97, or other state-numbered routes in Carroll County, may call the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration’s (MDOT SHA) District 7 Office at 301-624-8100 or toll-free at 1-800-635- 5119.

While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes, and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
