 SAFETY ALERT – Cascade Lake
Hampstead, MD, Friday,
July 27, 2018 – As a result of the recent heavy rainfall Cascade Lake is at its
maximum capacity and inspection of the dam has revealed some damage. With
anticipation of additional predicted rainfall this afternoon into this evening,
the level of the lake and the current condition of the dam, immediate action
must be taken to mitigate the situation. In an attempt to avoid a failure
of the dam the lake needs to be drained.
Plans
began yesterday to pump down the lake to a safe level where a controlled breach
of the dam can be accomplished are in place.
Areas
downstream of Cascade Lake along the Tributary of the East Branch of the
Patapsco River should be prepared for large amounts of water flowing downstream
while the lake is being pumped down and during the controlled breach.
Residents of the expected impact area have been and will continue to be
notified.
Affected
areas include locations south of Cascade Lake including Snydersburg Road,
Hampstead Mexico Road and Broadbeck Road.
Current
closed roads:
The
Carroll County Department of Public Works has closed Snydersburg Road between
Cape Horn Road and Hampstead Mexico Road (Maryland Route 482) due to the
emergency condition at Cascade Lake. This closure will last until the emergency
condition has been addressed. Detour routes have been posted.
Additional
roads may be closed if necessary.
Carroll
County appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation with any travel delays
or difficulties that this roadway closure may cause.
Additional
updates will be distributed via Twitter and Facebook from the Carroll County
Sheriff’s Office as warranted.
The
media staging area will be located in the parking lot at the Carroll County
Sheriff’s Office Training Academy at 1400 Panther Drive Hampstead, MD.
