29th Infantry Division Day Proclaimed

Westminster, MD, Thursday, May 31, 2018 – The Board of County Commissioners proclaimed June 6th, 2018 as 29th Infantry Division Day in recognition of the 74th Anniversary of the D-Day Landing and presented the proclamation today during the board’s open session.

The 29th Infantry Division was founded in 1917 with regiments from Maryland and Virginia, for service in World War I where they fought bravely in Alsace and Meuse Argonne Campaigns in France. The division was again called into federal service on February 3, 1941 for World War II, and played a decisive role when it became part of the first wave of the U. S. assault forces on Omaha Beach, Normandy, France on June 6, 1944, known as D-Day. The D-Day landings turned the tide of World War II and marked the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany. The 29th Infantry Division fought in campaigns through Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe until final victory on May 11, 1945.

As America marks the 74th Anniversary of the D-Day landing into World War II, many of the Veterans and their families will visit the Normandy American Cemetery, the final resting place for 9,300 United States servicemen. Hundreds of Veterans of the 29th Division are still serving the communities in Carroll County, the Nation, and overseas.

Several Veterans who served in the 29th Infantry Division were on hand for the proclamation ceremony.

The open session including the proclamation will be available for viewing on the county meeting portal, YouTube channel, and the county Facebook page. In addition, all meetings will be replayed on Comcast Channel 24.
