BALTIMORE, MD (April 17, 2013) – Director Alfred H. Foxx today announced that the Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW), Bureau of Solid Waste, has received Honorable Mention in the EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) Industry Alliance’s First Annual Excellence in EPS Recycling Award.
EPS is commonly known as Styrofoam, and DPW was recognized for its polystyrene recycling program at the Northwest Citizens’ Convenience Center, located at 2840 Sisson Street. The Styrofoam recycling program was established in November 2011.
DPW was recognized under the Special Programs & Initiatives category as a new program development or an existing program that improves and significantly increases EPS recycling. Baltimore’s program was noted for the drop-off center and for the promotion of Styrofoam recycling. Last year, over 5,600 lbs. of Styrofoam was recycled.
Director Foxx stated, “It is an honor to be nationally recognized for our recycling efforts and we intend to do more. Our single-stream recycling collections, and our easy drop-off locations, are very desirable programs. Programs like ours draw new residents to Baltimore and help to meet the Mayor’s goal of adding 10,000 new families over the next ten years.”
Baltimore was up against industry titans including Nutrisystem, Whirlpool, Omaha Steaks and Ikea. Dart Container, the company which collects Baltimore’s Styrofoam from our Sisson Street location, took the top prize.
