Dear Friends:
Families across Baltimore are preparing for the start of the school year. In my house, it means getting back into the right sleep cycle, buying clothes, and getting the supplies my daughter needs. This is a challenging time for all parents!
Yesterday, hundreds of young people flocked to North Avenue for the Mayor’s Annual Back to School Rally. Thanks to the support of a robust public and private partnership, we are able to offer families the things kids need to start the year off right: immunizations, school supplies, and even a fresh haircut.
Our rally also included hours of excellent live performances from artists such as Trey Songz, Diggy Simmons, OMG Girlz, and Mario. It was a tremendous way for Baltimore to kick-off the school year.
Monday, August 27 is the first day of school. It is important that every student arrives at school on time and ready to learn. Schools CEO Dr. Andres Alonso and I are working together to ensure that this year we continue the progress made improving test scores, enrollment, and graduation rates.
The continued improvement of city schools is a critical piece of our vision of growing Baltimore by 10,000 families in the next 10 years. To support this effort, my office has forged new partnerships with nonprofits to increase and improve after-school and early reading programs for young people. What’s more, this year we approved new and significant funding to begin addressing our aging school infrastructure.

Stephanie Rawlings-Blake
