Did you know? Women's History Month only began in 1987, my mother was born just three years prior. We had our first Women’s History Day in 1909 and it was finally established in 1911. We had our first Women's History Week in 1978 but we didn't officially have a month to celebrate the accomplishments of us women until 1987, only 36 years ago! It’s hard to imagine we didn't have this celebratory month not so long ago, for as long as I have been alive it has always been, but that's not the truth for some of our parents and grandparents.

Born on November 20, 1910, in Baltimore, Anna Paulin Murray was a civil rights activist, women’s rights activist, author, Episcopal priest, and lawyer. Murray was the first African American woman ordained as an Episcopal priest. Murray served on the board of directors of the National ACLU and played a key role in turning the organization’s attention to gender inequality and made it a priority. In addition, Murray also served on the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women.
Can you believe she grew up in the same city we are living in? Well you should, any woman in this city has the potential to succeed just as much as she did!
We are the future of women in Baltimore City RIGHT NOW at this exact moment. Someday other young girls and women will be hearing stories of our accomplishments and looking up to US!!! Isn't that exciting to even think about?
Businesswoman and transgender rights advocate, Sharon Brackett, moved from New York City to Baltimore, MD, where she continued her activism for LGBTQIA rights. In 2018, she became the first trans woman to be elected to a public office in the State of Maryland, to her District’s Democratic Central Committee. Brackett had over 25 years of experience in developing complex technology systems and mentored high school students through the Baltimore Bolts - Baltimore City's FIRST Robotics Competition team. She rocked!
