In this newsletter, we  support HBCU student leaders, we welcome our new Director of Communications and Engagement, we share our new #BMORE4THEFUTURE campaign and the new data dashboard for Baltimore’s guaranteed income pilot program. During this season we also highlight holiday fun for children and families and information about the Annual School Choice Fair for City Schools student success!

The Historically Black Colleges and Universities Career Development Marketplace 2022

Founded in 2001, the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Career Development Marketplace (HBCU CDM) held its 15th Annual HBCU Career Development Marketplace from November 2-4, 2022, at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore Inner Harbor. It is a one-of-a-kind career conference and expo designed to inform and educate HBCU students about corporate America as they transition from college to corporate America. The Career Development Marketplace consists of town hall meetings, workshop series, and the Career Development Marketplace. Since 2001, over 5,000 HBCU students from over 40 HBCUs have participated in the event. Many of the students have received on-the-spot job offers and internships. Corporations, non-profits, and government agencies from all over the country participated in the event, including companies such as Adidas, Washington Gas, UnitedHealth Group, The United States Institute of Peace, Textron, Amazon, Vanguard, Cardinal Health, FDIC, and many more.

Dr. Debra Y. Brooks, the Executive Director of the Mayor's Office of Children and Family Success, gave the opening remarks. She encouraged them to be lifelong learners and to continue striving for greatness. She applauded their courage and resilience as they navigated through a new normal following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The series of workshops, led by executives who shared what it means to “bring one's authentic self to the workplace”, why authenticity in the workplace is essential, and how authenticity is encouraged and valued, as well as discussions on wealth creation for college and beyond. Students were enthusiastic to network with employers as well as each other.

The Baltimore Young Families Success Fund (BYFSF) Data Dashboard

The Baltimore Young Families Success Fund (BYFSF), launched by Mayor Brandon M. Scott is a collaboration between the Mayor’s Office of Children and Family Success, the CASH Campaign of Maryland and the Mayor’s for a Guaranteed Income (MGI). BYFSF is providing 200 young parents, between 18 and 24 years old, with an unconditional cash payment of $1,000 per month over the course of 24 months to provide financial stability and help Baltimore’s families. 

The Guaranteed Income Pilots Dashboard provides visual data from the BYFSF and other guaranteed income pilots across the United States.

Young people are the most impacted by the emergencies confronting our reality. They also have the most creative thoughts and energy to design a better future for our world. 

The Mayor’s Office of Children & Family Success is dedicated to connecting youth to the resources they need to succeed and thrive and creating leadership opportunities that place youth voices at the center of discussions and decision-making on issues that affect them most.

We are excited to launch the re-branded @BMORE4THEFUTURE Instagram account. We encourage every young person to let their voices be heard by joining, sharing, and supporting #BMORE4THEFUTURE!

The 73rd annual Miracle on 34th Street

Located in Hampden, The 73rd annual Miracle on 34th Street is happening now! Since Nov. 26 and running through New Year's Day, the neighborhood has become electric in the ideal way conceivable, with lights and enhancements gladly embracing the holiday spirit. If you've never seen it, you ought to, and assuming you've been there previously, you realize you need to return.

What you need to know

The lights get turned on from 6 p.m. - 10 p.m. on weekdays. The lights go out at midnight on weekends.

ZOO LIGHTS PRESENTED BY CHASE

A brilliant seasonal spectacle is coming to the Zoo again this winter! Walk through a festival of lights shaped like wildlife and your face might just light up too. Your Choice is Your Pathway to Possibilities

School Choice is your pathway to possibilities. At City Schools, students choose their middle and high school.

City Schools is finalizing plans for this year’s Middle and High School Choice process. The Annual School Choice Fair will be held at the Baltimore Convention Center on December 3, 2022 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Using Campus Portal, 5th and 8th grade families can complete and submit their Choice applications between December 1, 2022, and January 20, 2023.

YouthWorks 2023 applications open on January 3, 2023!  

YouthWorks 2023 will operate a 5-week summer program for youth from Monday July 10th – Thursday August 10th. Youth may work five hours per day and five days per week, except for the four-day week ending on Thursday, August 10th. At most youth may work 25 hours per week for weeks 1 through 4 and up to 20 hours during week 5.

YouthWorkers will be introduced to workplace experiences, financial literacy development, career exploration opportunities, and skills training. Registered youth will be emailed with more information.
