Northwood Commons - MCB Real Estate and MLR Partners, along with support from the shopping center’s current owners and Morgan State University, will be redeveloping the Northwood Plaza. The new mixed-use shopping center will feature retail and dining along with Morgan State University’s Campus Safety Headquarters and Barnes & Noble Bookstore. Other plans include the addition of a grocery store, pharmacy, student apartments, and offices. The site will be rebranded as Northwood Commons.

Baltimore City LGBTQ Community Town Hall - Members of Baltimore’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minority communities gathered at City Hall for a town hall-style event last Wednesday evening. Hosted and moderated by LGBTQ liaisons of various city agencies, the event provided an opportunity to share feedback, thoughts and ideas about how city government can best address the needs of the LGBTQ community. Community members spoke about the need for economic growth, visible and accessible resources, and better data collection. This event was the first of its kind hosted at City Hall and I look forward to many more.

Community VRI Walk - Essential to our efforts to create a safer City for all Baltimore residents, our Violence Reduction Initiative (VRI) meeting takes place out in the community and in our most challenged neighborhoods each week. We concentrate the resources of City departments and agencies, along with the police to deal with issues in real-time that have the potential to fuel violent crime. Last week the Community VRI Walk was in Reservoir Hill.
Broadway Market Reopening - Last week, we announced the reopening of the Broadway Market North Shed with 3 longtime vendors and 5 new vendors to the market. The north shed will also be accompanied by a newly created public space with outdoor seating, landscaping and lighting where the current parking lot is located. This space will be programmed by the Baltimore Public Market Corporation with family-friendly activities associated with the market. There will be a total of at least 10 vendor stalls and a central bar in the north shed creating an exciting diverse mix of offerings in the new market. Construction on the north shed began in July 2018 and will be completed in early 2019 for a grand reopening.
CareFirst - CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, the region’s largest health insurer, is investing nearly $2.1 million in 11 community health organizations working to combat substance use disorders, including opioid use disorders, in Maryland, Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C. The grants will help the organizations bolster their substance use disorder treatment and prevention programs and expand their patients’ access to those programs. CareFirst’s contribution to the nonprofit health organizations is expected to impact more than 115,000 patients suffering from a substance use disorder.
Center/West - This has been a project, years in the making. This redevelopment in the Poppleton community further reflects my administration's commitment to driving investment and revitalization to the neighborhoods in our City that haven't seen investment in decades. This new building signals the beginning of that process, as this ribbon cutting was only phase one. There's more to come, in total, this project will build out 3.2 million square feet. Creating about 1,800 units of housing through four phases of construction.

Lots Alive Public Art Celebration - I believe public art benefits us all. The Baltimore Green Network provided funding to Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts for the installation of six public artwork installations that will be in place until October 2019. I am grateful to our key partners, Park Heights Renaissance and the Baltimore City Department of Housing and Community Development, for all their assistance in bringing this project to life.

Light City & the Baltimore Book Festival Join Forces - The Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts announced new dates for its festivals. The Baltimore Book Festival and Light City will now take place November 1-10, 2019. The literary festival will be the perfect companion to the light festival by becoming the conference portion of Light City.

What Lives in the Harbor - This program will provide the opportunity for all City Schools 6th graders to visit the National Aquarium and conduct hands-on scientific investigations of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Students will learn about watershed ecosystems and functions in the classroom, then conduct pH, salinity, turbidity and other tests at the National Aquarium before analyzing results and writing up environmental recommendations back in the classroom. Thirty-five schools have registered to participate this fall.

Winter Weather Preparedness - The winter season is quickly approaching, and I’m proud to announce that the City of Baltimore is fully prepared for whatever Mother Nature has in store for us this winter. Our snow team, comprised of the Departments of Transportation, Public Works, Recreation & Parks and General Services is geared up for the winter weather ahead. We are fully stocked with over 15,000 tons of salt and ready to treat city streets. We have worked hard to examine our operations and improve the level of service that we deliver to the citizens of Baltimore and we’ve identified ways to better allocate resources during a storm for improved operations.
Baltimore Golf Week Featuring the Mayor's Cup - Last week I announced the 2nd Annual Baltimore Golf Week, a 7-day celebration of golf in Baltimore that raises funds for the YouthWorks summer employment program. Baltimore Golf Week will culminate with the Mayor’s Cup, a fundraising event open to sponsors of Baltimore Golf Week and the top golfers from each of the Classic Five Golf Courses, that will be held on Sunday, June 9th at the Forest Park Golf Course. Events will be held across five public golf courses and the Pine Ridge Driving Range from Monday, June 3rd through Sunday, June 9th. All of the Baltimore Golf Week events and Mayor’s Cup will help raise funds to support the YouthWorks program.
