Keeping Citizens Informed As We Move Baltimore Forward | July 27, 2018
Howard Row Transformation
July 25, 2018 - Howard Row Groundbreaking Mayor Catherine E. Pugh, City of Baltimore greets Greg Kostrikin, President, Poverni Sheikh Group and Ibrahim Sheikh, President, Permira Construction
Transforming dilapidated and vacant buildings of our City
into new living and retail spaces that fuel economic development and
opportunity for business owners is among our highest priorities. It’s for this
reason that I was so excited to formally launch the transformation of five
vacant buildings, in the area known as “Howard Row” in the 400 block of North
Howard Street into five new retail spaces and 21 new apartments. Located in the
Bromo Arts District, this 50,000 square feet of new development in close
proximity to light rail, cafes and restaurants, several arts and entertainment
venues and the University of Maryland Medical Center will do much to further
revitalize this important corridor of our West side. Stay tuned…
Mayor’s Teen Biz
Challenge
July 25, 2018 - Mayor’s Teen Biz Challenge. Welcoming and celebrating our brilliant Baltimore youth entrepreneurs as they complete their final week of the Teen Biz Challenge and prepared to display and pitch their business ideas.
We
have no more important task than to create pathways for your young people so
that they can achieve their full potential and make the impact they
desire. I was inspired this past
Wednesday to join with the 27 remarkable participants in this year’s class
which convened in partnership with the Youth Entrepreneurship Startup (Y.E.S.)
at Baltimore City Community College. We
all must celebrate our many brilliant and determined young entrepreneurs. They
are the future leaders of our City and without question, are even now making
that future so much brighter.
Advocating for
Women’s Health
July 23, 2018 - Title X "Domestic Gag Rule" Press Conference -
Mayor Catherine E. Pugh, Baltimore City, joined Senator Chris Van Hollen, Senator Ben Cardin
, Dr. Leana Wen, Commissioner, Health Department for the City of Baltimore, Representative Elijah Cummings, Representative Dutch Ruppersberger, and Representative John Sarbanes
It was pleasure and duty to join with our Congressional
delegation and our Health Commissioner, Dr. Leana Wen, this past Monday to
alert citizens of the dangers posed by the US Department of Health & Human
Services’ proposed rule that would prevent funding to any health centers that
offer the full range of family planning services to women, or from referring
pregnant women to evidence-based reproductive health options – or, even
discussing options with them. Currently,
the Baltimore City Health Department oversees “Title X” Federal funding for the
City, which is distributed to 23 area clinics. One in three women in Baltimore
City are in need of publicly-funded health care services which helps to
drastically reduce teen pregnancy. This rule
is bad for them and for all women.
Morning Masters Brunch for Entrepreneurs
July 21, 2018 - Health is Wealth Panel at Morning Masters Brunch for Entrepreneurs hosted by Mayor's Office of Small, Minority and Women Business
I
was so uplifted by the wonderful conversation I enjoyed with the many entrepreneurs
who participated in our Morning Masters Brunch for Entrepreneurs last Saturday.
The goal of this initiative of the Mayor’s Office of Small, Minority and Women
Business is to convene community leaders, policy makers, and public health
experts for thoughtful and engaging conversations on total wellness, business
strategy, resource development and neighborhood revitalization. Connecting these wonderful entrepreneurs with
each other and with essential resources is not only to their benefit, but to
the benefit of our City’s future.
Women’s Commission
Leadership
July 26, 2018 - Leadership Meeting for the Women's Commission
Benefitting from the many talented and accomplished women of
our City and providing a forum to share ideas and develop solutions to our
challenges is the reason I re-established the Baltimore City Commission of
Women at the start of the year. More
than 100 of our community’s best and brightest women eagerly signed-up to be
part of this ongoing working Committee to address issues such as aging, domestic
violence, employment and economic opportunity, health education equity, public
safety, youth opportunities and leadership. I am grateful that so many joined
me on Thursday at City Hall and I look so forward to our ongoing collaboration.
Our City is so fortunate to have the benefit of these extraordinarily capable
and committed women – and so many others just like them!
