Baltimore City Awarded National "Choice Neighborhood" HUD Grant
July 19, 2018 - Mayor Catherine E. Pugh with Interim Police Commissioner Gary Tuggle, Councilman Robert Stokes, Sr. - District 12, Comptroller Joan M. Pratt, Executive Director, Housing Authority of Baltimore City Janet Abrahams, POWER House Community Center Director Travis Street, HUD Mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator Joe DeFelice, and residents of Perkins Homes at the National "Choice Neighborhood" HUD Grant Announcement.
On July 19th we announced that Baltimore was
selected as one of 5 cities to receive a US Department of Urban Development
“Choice Neighborhood Investment” grant in the amount of $30 million. This significant award is nothing short of
transformative, enabling us to guarantee affordable new housing for every
resident of the 75 year-old Perkins Homes housing development. It will also
enable us to attract further investment for the creation of a new school,
additional housing and community development in the larger Perkins Somerset
Oldtown neighborhood community. We are
excited for Baltimore and all our partners in this revitalization project who,
together with us, are moving Baltimore forward.
I wish to share my guest
editorial as featured in the Baltimore
Sun which details our key priority to create a new era of neighborhood
investment in the neglected areas of our city: Mayor

July 17, 2018 - 2018 Local Health Department of the Year Announcement with Mayor Catherine E. Pugh, Dr. Leana Wen and the Baltimore City Health Department Leadership Team
It
is with tremendous pride that we announced this week that the Baltimore City
Health Department was named 2018 Local Health Department of the Year by the
National Association of City and County Health Officials. I am extremely proud of the work of our
Health Department and the leadership of our health commissioner Dr. Leana Wen. The
Health Department team consistently finds ways to improve the health and
well-being of all of Baltimore’s residents, using public health to create a
better quality of life in communities across our City.

TBT Basketball Tournament Returns to Baltimore
Each and every day of the work week, leaders from every City
agency join me in meeting with Police District Commanders as part of our
Violence Reduction Initiative (VRI) to identify and develop solutions to
neighborhood issues that have the potential to lead to violence and
crime. This Violence Once a week, we walk throughout a specific
neighborhood to meet with community leaders and residents and see first-hand
the problems that threaten the safety of citizens and their quality of life.
This initiative – along with our bi-monthly “Call to Action” meetings is leading
to clear and positive results. Crime continues to decline in every category:
homicides are down 20%; non-fatal shootings are down 10%, overall violent crime is down 16%, burglaries are down 28%, and aggravated assaults are down 13%. Overall, total crime in the
city is down 18% compared to the same period last year. We will continue to be relentless
in our efforts to reduce crime and create a City worthy of all our citizens.
