Mayor Rawlings-Blake Announces the Convening of the Off Street Parking Commission

WHAT:

BALTIMORE, Md. (November 14, 2016) — Today, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced the convening of a public meeting of the Off Street Parking Commission. The Commission was created by ordinance pursuant to state law and the City Charter to acquire, develop, finance as well as sell parking facilities. The Commission will consider the Sale of Properties – Parking Structures – 11 South Eutaw Street, 22 South Gay Street, 101 South Paca Street, and 210 Saint Paul Place. Action taken by the body would authorize the Finance Department to negotiate the sale of the garages, subject to Board of Estimates approval.

Subsequent to Finance Department, Parking Authority as well as an external review of the inventory of City assets, four parking facilities were identified as being financially sensible for sale. This ultimately prompted the Mayor in 2014 to introduce a bill in the City Council authorizing the sale of these facilities, while pledging the dedication of the sales proceeds towards recreation and parks capital projects. The Mayor introduced an ambitious $135 million plan to build new recreation, athletics and aquatics facilities to fill geographic gaps in communities and to replace existing, outdated and deteriorating facilities. Mayor Rawlings-Blake said “I’ve always seen this sale as win-win. It makes financial sense to sell these garages. Simultaneously it will allow us to do great things for our youth and our communities.” The Mayor further stated “The new C.C. Jackson, Rita Church and Morrell Park Recreation centers have demonstrated what is possible and what could be replicated throughout the City. I believe that this initiative is a natural extension of what we were able to accomplish with the 21st Century School Construction plan. That is why I am hoping that after Thursday, we can advance this very important issue that can be put towards a multi-million dollar plan for our youth and that will ultimately benefit the entire City.”
