Full steam ahead: cadet chat
Every year, the Steamship Authority recruits cadets from maritime academies across the country to work on our vessels and experience what it’s like to work on the water. They gain real-world experience in a maritime field and learn from everyone, from the deck personnel to the captains. We get the benefit of their hard work during the busy summer season. This summer, we are thrilled to have eight cadets join us from various maritime academies.
Massachusetts Maritime Academy cadet Bryanca Lorentsen sat down for a chat about her experience so far, her goals, and her most exciting times so far. Thanks to Bryanca and all our cadets for their hard work!

What year are you in school, and what is your major?
I am a senior at Mass. Maritime, majoring in marine transportation and minoring in emergency management.
What made you want to join the Steamship Authority’s Cadetship Program?
I would say just to be on the water and get my foot in the door, and learn more about my major. It is very similar to Mass. Maritime, and I enjoy the environment. The people are amazing.

What are you most excited to learn this summer?
I think the wheelhouse. I am not always in there, but I'm excited just to understand certain aspects like the course and using landmarks to turn the ship. I also want to learn more about line handling as well.
What’s a goal you have while you’re here?
The experience and making connections. I have met so many people from Mass. Maritime and have seen how they have moved up the ranks.

What’s one fun fact people might not know about you?
I am the youngest of nine siblings and the first to go to college.
If you had to describe your summer in a few words right now, what would it be?
Empathetic toward working with everyone.
