Steamship Authority cadet chat: Erica Penny
Each year, the Steamship Authority recruits cadets to work on our vessels and gain some sea time as they pursue their maritime education. This summer, we were excited to have 10 cadets join us from maritime academies both locally and nationally!
We asked cadet Erica Penny for her thoughts on the summer, and we’d like to thank Erica and the other cadets for their hard work. We enjoyed having you! We wish you smooth sailing in your education and hope to see you back on board soon!

What year are you in school, and at what university?
Fifth-year student, Maine Maritime Academy

|
How did you know that you wanted to pursue this field?
I knew I loved boats, so I originally wanted to go into the U.S. Navy. When that didn't work out for me, I still stuck on this career path of being on the water.
What have you learned during your summer at the Steamship Authority?
I learned that even when things don't go the way you plan, it’s more important how you handle and react to the situation than just giving up. You have to adapt to every situation you’re put in because not every day–or every trip–is going to be the same.

Can you share a favorite moment, memory, or funny story from this summer?
One of my best moments was helping create the sign for retiring Capt. Mike Mazza that we displayed on the bow of our boat. Or when I was so confident that there were two anchors on our boat (there’s only one!) and instead of anyone putting me down about it, we all just laughed at the situation. Sometimes they would still ask me about the “other anchor!”
 |
|
Do you have any advice for future Steamship Authority cadets?
My advice would be to learn the boat you're on. It’s not the best look when customers ask you questions about the boat, and you don't know the answer to it. Also just enjoy your time here! Make friends with the crew and work hard!
