Hurricane Ida Recovery
Hurricane Ida recovery efforts continue to remove debris from our roads. Follow the NOLA Ready page for Ida updates including debris removal. One concern from Ida is bike lane debris, which can force bicyclists into the roadway and create potentially dangerous situations. To report hazardous debris found in bike lanes, call 3-1-1 or visit nola311.org. DPW's new street cleaner, affectionally named Lil Sweepy, continues to work on clearing protected bike lanes for safe riding. |

Safer Streets Priority Finder Launches
The City of New Orleans, in partnership with the Regional Transit Authority, University of New Orleans Transportation Institute, and Toole Design Group, has launched a new traffic safety analysis tool: the Safer Streets Priority Finder (SSPF). Developed through the support of a U.S. Department of Transportation Safety Data Initiative grant, the tool provides planners and engineers with a low-barrier method to identify and prioritize roadway safety improvements. The tool will be integrated into the City and RTA’s project development process to help identify and prioritize safety funding for areas that are high risk to vulnerable roadway users.

Railroad Quiet Zones Feasibility Process Underway
The City of New Orleans has sent out initial notices of intent to begin the feasibility process for four candidate quiet zone corridors: Audubon/Uptown area, Bywater, Downtown Riverfront, and Homer Plessy Way. This action marks the beginning of a 60-day comment period, which will be followed by a thorough corridor analysis. A planning and design process with the railroads and stakeholders will ultimately determine the feasibility and costs of implementing the upgrades to crossings that a quiet zone requires (warning lights, gate arms, etc.).

RTA Holds Bus Rapid Transit Study
In September, New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) kicked off a 10-month long feasibility study for a proposed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor. In a virtual kick-off meeting Alex Wiggins, RTA CEO provided the goals and objectives of the project to the consultant team ISLI Engineering, HNTB and the Hawthorne Group. Plus, an array of partners including representatives from the New Orleans Regional Planning Commission, the City of New Orleans, and other regional partners.
The study is initially for a dedicated transit corridor between New Orleans East and downtown with a possible extension to Algiers. The project will help the RTA to improve transit equity by significantly reducing commute times within the region and is the next step to deliver on previous plans including the New Links regional bus network redesign and the RTA’s Strategic Mobility Plan.
The project will deliver design standards for BRT on any corridor in the region and a corridor-specific plan with preliminary design, conceptual operations, construction costs, and funding strategies for the proposed corridor.
