Sunday, Aug 22: Disability Etiquette Volunteer Training
Have you heard of disability etiquette? Do you have questions about how to interact with people with disabilities during emergencies, but are too afraid to ask?
During a City Assisted Evacuation, volunteers and staff will engage with people with various medical, mobility, and mental health needs. It is important that volunteers feel confident in the ability to guide people with disabilities through the evacuation process, ensuring equitable treatment throughout an already stressful emergency. This training will help keep your best intentions well informed and equip you to approach people of all backgrounds with respect and dignity.
Ms. Rickii Ainey and Dr. Ashley Volion, two advocates with disabilities in New Orleans, will lead this interactive training.
In this training, participants will learn:
- Proper terminology
- How to appropriately communicate with and assist people with disabilities
- Have the opportunity to ask any question without judgement
- How to guide an individual who is blind safely and respectfully
- How to interact with an individual who is Deaf/HOH
- How and why ill-informed best intentions can lead to serious consequences
- What it is like to go through a hurricane as a person with a disability
