Mayor Cantrell Joins Call for Safety and Equity Reforms to Federal Street Manual
Mayor Cantrell joined other U.S. city leaders, transit agencies, and national organizations to call for modernizing the Federal Highway Administration’s Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. In the open call for comments, over 25,000 were submitted by Americans in support of making key changes to the Manual.
“As our city works on ambitious plans to make our streets safer and more accessible, from building a bikeway network to addressing systemic safety concerns, we are too often finding that the MUTCD conflicts with new mobility best practices,” said LaToya Cantrell, Mayor of New Orleans. “The federal manual must be reformed so that it more closely aligns with the equity, safety, and sustainability goals of the Biden Administration.”

RTA Introduces Reduced Fare Structure, includes new passes for Youth and Seniors
RTA introduced a modified fare structure to begin in July of 2021 that includes reductions for several pass types and new discounted fares for youth and seniors. The revised fare structure will cost .40 for a single ride senior and .50 for a single ride youth (K-18). A 1-Day Jazzy Pass, which allows transfers between busses and ferries for an entire day, would cost .80 for seniors and 1.00 for youth. The revised fare structure aims to improve transit accessibility for populations who typically rely more heavily on public transit, and is expected to increase ridership. The fare structure was first presented at the RTA’s Committee meetings on May 13, followed by a presentation to the RTA Board at their May 25 meeting, and then to New Orleans City Council’s Transportation Committee on Wednesday May 26th. These modifications are proposed to start July 2021, and would run temporarily through December 2021. The RTA is undergoing a thorough fare study and is expected to bring a proposal for permanent fare changes to the board in 2022.

City Attends ANPC Meeting to Discuss Bike Infrastructure
Last Tuesday, May 25, members of the Office of Transportation and Department of Public Works attended a meeting held by the Algiers Neighborhood Presidents Council to answer community questions about the recent roadway project, including bike infrastructure, on MacArthur Blvd. As a result, the City is analyzing the current plans for the rest of the Algiers bike network buildout, and the infrastructure already put in place to determine if there are any opportunities to address the community feedback while providing the safety and access improvements. The network buildout is part of the City’s broader initiative to construct 75 miles of protected bike infrastructure in order to improve roadway safety for all users and provide a network for people bicycling.
