The New Links Transit Planning Project Enters Phase 3, Releases Proposed Redesign, Asks for your feedback!
New Links, a planning project tasked with reimagining how public transit connects Orleans, Jefferson, and St. Bernard parishes, published their Proposed Network Report in November after considering feedback from community members and transit riders. The Proposed Network features improved frequency, transit hubs, better job access across parish lines, and a redesign with more equitable service. New Links is taking feedback on the plan from riders and community members through this survey which will help the team complete the plan for final recommendation to the RTA and JET.

Moving New Orleans Bikes Progress: Public Meetings and Franklin Avenue Construction
The Office of Transportation and Department of Public Works continued public engagement efforts for Moving New Orleans Bikes (MNOB) with three recent public meetings. In October, we held a Conceptual Design Meeting for corridors in the CBD and Warehouse District, and in November for corridors in the 7th Ward Area. A Pre-Construction Meeting for corridors in Central City and the Lower Garden District was also held in November. Feedback from these meetings will be used to refine concepts. All meetings are archived on our website if you missed them, with factsheets detailing proposals for each corridor.
MNOB completed construction of new paving and bicycle markings on Franklin Avenue. Check out the paving and bicycle markings for a smooth ride down an important but long-neglected stretch of Faubourg Marigny.

City Launches Parklet Pilot Program

As part of the City's Outdoor Dining initiative, a Parklet Pilot Program was launched for local restaurants and bars to utilize on-street parking spaces for additional seating. The Parklets will provide additional safe areas for diners while occupancy limitations continue due to COVID-19. To date, over two dozen businesses have applied and parklets are rolling out around the City. All fees associated with the parklet permit are waived through March 31. A permanent parklet program is being developed to continue after the pilot with ADA compliant build-outs from the curb/sidewalk, drainage systems, and other design elements. French Quarter Pedestrianization Work Continues with French Market Place Charrette
Efforts to reimagine a more pedestrian-centered French Quarter continued into the next phase of public engagement with a November design charrette. Taking place online due to COVID-19, the meeting reviewed a refined French Market Place design proposal, which included an expansion of walking space, places to sit, and additional space for vendors and businesses to operate within social distancing guidelines. The feedback from the meeting will be used to further inform the design and future implementation. Streatery Pilot Launches with DDD and Domain Companies

The City of New Orleans, in partnership with the Downtown Development District (DDD) and The Domain Companies, coordinated a Streatery Pilot in the CBD’s South Market neighborhood. The Pilot involves a street closure downtown on the lakebound side of Girod Street between South Rampart Street and O’Keefe Avenue from Dec. 15, 2020 to Jan. 2, 2021. The Streatery Pilot will close off the entire public right of way to through traffic to be utilized for business activities along that stretch, and for patrons to use proper social distance. No parking, loading zones, or residential access points will be affected during the pilot.
“One of Mayor Cantrell's priorities has been for us as a City to remain nimble and test street treatments that provide more spaces for businesses to service their patrons while occupancy is restricted due to COVID-19. Canal Street Reopens Riverside After Hard Rock
The river-bound lane of Canal Street from Elk Place to Burgundy Street was reopened to vehicular traffic at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 19. Also reopened was South Rampart Street in both directions. The lake-bound lane of Canal Street between Basin and Burgundy streets will remain closed as demolition of the remaining structure at 1031 Canal St. progresses. The same situation applies to North Rampart Street between Canal and Bienville Streets. No restorations have been made to streetcar service impacted by the building collapse at 1031 Canal St. |
