What Have We Been Up To?
Building Youth and Parent Leadership
Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI)
|
|
OYF is proud to partner with the Health Department’s Healthy Start program to launch the Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI) this fall. PLTI is a 20-week leadership program that increases the civic skills of diverse parents/caregivers to become leading advocates for their children and changemakers in their community. The cohort began their PLTI journey last Saturday, Nov. 2nd! |
Mayor's Youth Advisory Council
This month, OYF formally launched the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council (MYAC), which develops youth leaders by engaging them in policy-making. The inaugural cohort is comprised of twenty one youth, ages 14-18.
As part of their commitment to be civic leaders, MYAC members provide ongoing feedback to the Mayor and City departments, organize an annual youth leadership summit, and complete a collective impact project.
MYAC members will present to the New Orleans City Council on November 7th to share a series of youth-focused recommendations and priorities for the 2020 City budget.
Leveraging Libraries as Health Hubs
Healthy Women New Orleans
Through a partnership with the New Orleans Health Department, the New Orleans Public Libraries, and Touro Hospital, the Healthy Women New Orleans health series brings blood pressure screenings and maternal health resources to public libraries across the city.
In our state, expectant African American mothers are dying from childbirth at a rate that is three to four times that of white mothers. High blood pressure, or hypertension, is the leading cause of pregnancy complications and can cause problems during and after delivery. Early identification and intervention are critical to preventing serious complications.
At each event, women are provided with free blood pressure screenings, a consultation with a Touro healthcare provider, and information about a number of programs offered by the New Orleans Health Department and other City agencies.
Come visit Algiers Regional Library on November 9th from 10AM-12PM to learn more!

Social Workers in Libraries
This spring, OYF and the New Orleans Public Libraries developed a trauma-informed strategic plan to improve the services available to library patrons. In the next few weeks, the libraries will be hiring a licensed social worker who will work to enhance outreach and support to patrons. Be on the lookout for the job posting on OYF and NOPL websites!
New Developments at OYF
Community Resource Guides: In Print and Online!
The New Orleans Children & Youth Planning Board (CYPB), Mayor’s Office of Youth and Families (OYF), and New Orleans Youth Alliance (NOYA) teamed up with VIA LINK to launch Youth NOLA -- a New Orleans community resource database with a youth-focused spin.
The newly released Youth NOLA online database highlights youth-focused categorizes, and maps over 300 (and growing!) child, youth, and family-friendly resources throughout Orleans Parish.
Additionally, through a partnership with the New Orleans Youth Alliance, community members can now learn about all of the youth programs available throughout the city by picking up a copy of the 2019 youth program resource directory in print!
