New Orleans' First ‘Power Hour’ for Girls
On July 31st, the Office of Youth and Families convened the first-ever, “Ladies’ Power Hour” for an evening of girls and women empowerment, networking, and entertainment. Young women, including many who entered into OYF’s ‘Madame Mayor for a Day’ writing contest, participated in mentor matching activities with women from diverse professional backgrounds throughout New Orleans. A number of elected officials as well as women leaders in healthcare, law, arts/entertainment, public safety, education/nonprofits and business/tech sectors attended and built connections with young, aspiring leaders.
The Mayor also used this event as an opportunity to announce the #HerNola initiative, which is focused on improving outcomes for women and girls across the sectors of workforce development, civic leadership, and maternal/child health. Nola.com recently published an article about the Power Hour and you can read more here!

Designing a Vision for a Child-Friendly New Orleans
|
|
On July 24th, the Office of Youth and Families, with the assistance of internationally-acclaimed planning firm ARUP, hosted a workshop for community stakeholders to design a vision for “child-friendly” New Orleans. |
A diverse cross-section of city department and non-profit representatives from the fields of housing, transportation, infrastructure, recreation, education, health and philanthropy came together with young people to discuss ways to create a more child friendly city. Overall, there was broad consensus about the need for enhanced transportation and infrastructure to ensure safe and accessible connection to existing programming and services. Youth suggested a number of ideas, ranging from transforming blighted lots into play spaces and designing safer street routes to school, employment and recreational hubs. We are excited to present the final recommendations and report, which will be available on our website. We are so thankful to ARUP, Tulane University, and PlayBuild for co-sponsoring the event!
