Roundtable Recap!
On the morning of Saturday, June 22nd at the Mosquito and Rodent Control Building, nearly 100 neighborhood leaders from all across New Orleans gathered for the second Neighborhood Leaders’ Roundtable of 2019. Our fantastic lineup of guest speakers included NOLA Ready project manager, Laura Mellem, Deputy Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Ronnie Henderson, and City of New Orleans Director of Code Enforcement, Winston Reid.
Much was learned about preparing for emergencies including hurricanes, evacuation support for special needs citizens, the critical importance to have homeowners and flood insurance, and the efforts that Code Enforcement are making to clean the city and make it more vibrant. Excellent questions were asked by your fellow residents, and a good discussion was had.
Thank you to all of our engaged and enthusiastic attendees, and to all of our informative guest speakers. We hope you can join us at the next Roundtable!

Mayor Cantrell, New Orleans’ first woman Mayor, emphasizes that, “young girls must understand that they can be anything they desire and I am excited to give them an up-close-and-personal look at civic engagement and leadership.”
The Madame Mayor for a Day contest was born from the Mayor's commitment to girls empowerment and civic engagement. Launched in March, Women's History month, The Madame Mayor for a Day essay contest encourages New Orleans girls to think about positive impacts they can make in their own community, state, and country.
New Orleans girls between the ages of 11 and 18 were invited to submit an essay detailing how they would improve New Orleans if they were Mayor for the day. Over 160 girls entered the contest and three winners were ultimately selected. Each winner will be sworn in as ‘Deputy Mayor’ and accompany Mayor Cantrell to meetings and engagements for an entire day.

New Links is a yearlong project to study and propose a network redesign of public transportation in Orleans, Jefferson, and St. Bernard Parishes. The project is a partnership between the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) and Regional Planning Commission (RPC), in collaboration with Jefferson Transit (JeT) and St. Bernard Urban Rapid Transit (SBURT). Over the next few months, the New Links team will study each bus, streetcar and ferry line in the New Orleans region while working with the public to understand what riders and stakeholders need from public transportation. At the end of the project, the New Links team will propose a redesigned transit network with specific changes designed to make public transportation work better for riders.
Public meetings will be taking place throughout the month of July in each of the City Council Districts.
