Upcoming NOMRC Events

July 10, 2018

Dear NOMRC Members,

With hurricane season upon us, we are looking for NOMRC members willing to stay in New Orleans during a hurricane evacuation or return early after one. Volunteers will work with first responders and health department staff to operate shelters and prepare for evacuee re-entry. All volunteers who stay must have completed NOMRC orientation and paperwork and be at least 18 years old.  Family members, children, and pets will not be allowed.  If you are interested in volunteering during these times, please contact Sarah Babcock at sababcock@nola.gov to sign up and discuss this opportunity more in depth. We have a few volunteers willing to take on this role, but we are looking to have at least twenty people registered for this role.

Please see the list of upcoming events for New Member Orientation, Opioid Overdose Training, and Stop the Bleed classes. We will be adding more training courses and volunteer options throughout the summer!

Naloxone (Opioid Overdose) Train the Trainer

Since 1999, opioid deaths have quadrupled in the United States.  In 2016, there were 211 opioid overdose deaths in New Orleans and in 2017 New Orleans EMS responded to more than 1,200 overdoses. Naloxone (Narcan) is an overdose reversal medication that is safe for anyone to use and is the most effective way to stop an opioid overdose.  NOMRC members who complete this session will be able to teach the community how to use naloxone and discuss the opioid epidemic. Over the next few months we will begin offering these trainings along with CPR and tourniquet use.
