Upcoming NOMRC Events

June 26, 2018

Dear NOMRC Members,

It is that time of year that I need to know which volunteers are willing to stay with first responders and health department staff or return early after a hurricane evacuation.  Volunteers who stay will be used to operate a shelter and prepare for re-entry. All volunteer who stay must have completed NOMRC orientation and paperwork and be over 18 year old.  Family members, children, and pets will not be allowed.  If you are willing to volunteer during this time please contact Sarah Babcock at sababcock@nola.gov to sign up and discuss this opportunity more in depth. We have three volunteers willing to take on this role, but we are looking to have at least 20 people stay with us.

See upcoming events listed below for new member orientation and the opioid epidemic. We will also be doing outreach in the neighborhood where we have found 4 mosquito pools with West Nile.  Please let us know if you are able to help out.

Mosquito Outreach for West Nile Cases

Over the past two weeks, we've had 4 mosquito pools test positive for West Nile.  There have been no reported human cases.  On Wednesday, June 27th from 4:30-7:30pm we will conduct door to door outreach to check yards for standing water and educate residents about protecting themselves from mosquito bites. If you would like to assist please contact Tim Murphy at tmurphy@nola.gov so he can give you the meeting location.

New Member Orientation

If you have friends or family who want to volunteer with the NOMRC, please have them attend a new member orientation listed below.  Starting in February, all orientation sessions will include a hands on naloxone training. Please have people RSVP to Marissa Daniels at mddaniels@nola.gov to sign up and to get more details about these orientation sessions.

Opioid/Naloxone Train the Trainer

Since 1999, opioid deaths have quadrupled in the United States.  In 2016, there were 211 opioid overdose deaths in New Orleans and in 2017 New Orleans EMS responded to more than 1,200 overdoses. Naloxone (Narcan) is an overdose reversal medication is safe for anyone to use and can save lives.  NOMRC members who complete this session will be able to teach the community how to use naloxone and discuss the opioid epidemic. Over the next few months we will begin offering these trainings along with CPR and tourniquet use.
