June Newsletter

June 13, 2018

Dear NOMRC Members,

We have entered hurricane season and it is expected to be a busy year.  Thank you to those who attended our annual hurricane season training and psychological first aid.

It is that time of year that I need to know which volunteers are willing to stay with first responders and health department staff or return early after a hurricane evacuation.  Volunteers who stay will be used to operate a shelter and prepare for re-entry. All volunteer who stay must have completed NOMRC orientation and paperwork and be over 18 year old.  Family members, children, and pets will not be allowed.  If you are willing to volunteer during this time please contact Sarah Babcock at sababcock@nola.gov to sign up and discuss this opportunity more in depth.

See upcoming events listed below for new member orientation and the opioid epidemic.

Opioid/Naloxone Train the Trainer

Since 1999, opioid deaths have quadrupled in the United States.  In 2016, there were 211 opioid overdose deaths in New Orleans and in 2017 New Orleans EMS responded to more than 1,200 overdoses. Naloxone (Narcan) is an overdose reversal medication is safe for anyone to use and can save lives.  NOMRC members who complete this session will be able to teach the community how to use naloxone and discuss the opioid epidemic. Over the next few months we will begin offering these trainings along with CPR and tourniquet use.
