Curbside
Collection of Glass to End in the French Quarter and Downtown Development
District
City to
add glass collection at its Recycling Drop-Off Center
NEW ORLEANS – On Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017, curbside collection
of glass will end in the French Quarter and the Downtown Development District
(DDD). Beginning Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, the City of New Orleans Department of
Sanitation will add glass to its list of items accepted at the City’s Recycling
Drop-Off Center (2829 Elysian Fields Ave.) on the second Saturday of each month
from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.
In September 2015, the City began
collecting glass curbside each week in the French Quarter and the DDD.
Due to low participation of eligible properties, the City can no longer justify
the cost of the program to taxpayers. The curbside glass collection
program in the French Quarter and the DDD will be replaced by the addition of
glass to the Recycling Drop-Off Center’s list of accepted items, so that all
Orleans Parish residents can recycle glass. The last date for the
curbside collection of glass in the French Quarter and the DDD is January 12,
2017.
Residents can bring up to 20 lbs.
of glass to be recycled in addition to the items already accepted at the
Drop-Off Center.
In addition to glass, Orleans
Parish residents can drop off the following items on the second Saturday of
each month: paper products (newspapers, junk mail, phone books, catalogs,
office paper and color inserts); plastics #1 through #7 (water, soda, juice,
detergent, plastic pots from nurseries, plastic bags, etc.); metals (aluminum,
tin and steel cans); cardboard; boxboard (cereal boxes); Mardi Gras beads;
batteries (AA, AAA, AAAA, C, D, 6 & 9 volt); light bulbs (incandescent and
fluorescent); and electronics such as computers, laptops, phones, televisions
(limit 4), microwave ovens and tires (limit 4).
