Traffic restrictions begin Friday for state’s $3.4 million upgrade of US 60 west of Ashland
One lane Summit to Rose Hill, temporary KY 716 intersection closure
FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (March 25, 2014) – Contractors expect to begin US 60 lane and intersection closures Friday for a $3.4 million rebuild of the Ashland area highway.
The project will replace US 60’s existing raised median with a center turn lane along the four-lane highway between Summit and Rose Hill west of downtown Ashland, and includes new blacktop and concrete intersection improvements.
New right turn lanes will also be built on intersecting roadways – KY 716, KY 1134 (Winslow Road) at Rose Hill, KY 1012 (Boy Scout Road) and KY 766 (Bob McCullough Drive) – so traffic will have a dedicated lane to make right turns onto US 60. And, a new right turn lane will be built on US 60 for improved access to KY 1134 at Rose Hill.
To start construction, all traffic on US 60 will shift to one lane beginning Friday, March 27, as contractors close the inside left lane along the entire two-mile work zone in each direction. And, concrete work will require a temporary partial closure of KY 716 leading to Summit and Little Garner.
The following traffic restrictions at the KY 716 intersection will be in effect for approximately one week, Friday, March 27, through April 5:
- No left turns at KY 716. Eastbound US 60 traffic (traveling toward Ashland) cannot turn left onto KY 716 at the traffic light, and must detour using KY 3292 (Roberts Drive) and KY 766 (Bob McCullough Drive). Detour will be marked. The Summit Road intersection west of the work area will not be affected.
- Right in, right out. Westbound US 60 traffic (coming from Ashland) can turn right onto KY 716, but cannot turn left at the light. Traffic coming from KY 716 will be able to make a right turn only onto westbound US 60. Summit traffic needing access to eastbound US 60 toward Ashland must detour using KY 3292 (Roberts Drive) and KY 766 (Bob McCullough Drive). Detour will be marked. The Summit Road intersection west of the work area will not be affected.
Work at the KY 716 intersection has been planned to coincide with area spring break schedules to avoid conflicts with school traffic. However, road work is subject to change depending on weather conditions. Motorists should watch message boards for any schedule changes.
On US 60, one-lane traffic will be maintained with intermittent median closures throughout the duration of the project – which is expected to be complete by mid- to late July – and with a reduced speed limit of 35 miles per hour. The work zone will be a double-fine zone when workers are present.
Because an average of 16,800 cars a day use the highway, motorists should expect increased travel times and delays through the work zone.
Motorists are asked to heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.
This road improvement project is being done under a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet low-bid contract of $3,437,179.10 awarded to Mountain Enterprises Inc.
