KYTC D9 Snow Update 7 AM: New snow re-covering roads; plow drivers remain on their routes
FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (6:30 AM, Feb. 18, 2015) – Kentucky Department of Highways District 9 plows are on roads again this morning, responding to a fresh round of snow showers.
As of 7 a.m., counties in the western part of the district had seen a half inch or more of new snow, which is re-covering previously-cleared routes. Crews in Bath, Fleming, Nicholas, Lewis, Mason, and Rowan who were already working Monday's storm are plowing roads and applying salt this morning to prevent future bonding of snow to pavement. Remaining counties - Greenup, Boyd, Carter and Elliott - are readying plows and salt trucks and will follow suit, if they haven't already.
Air and road temperatures are around 8 degrees, which means salt has little effect on snow. Motorists should expect slick conditions on all roads today, and know that main routes might not be clear again until snow showers end.
With record snowfall in some areas of Kentucky, clearing all roads of snow cover could take several days, during which time highway crews will remain at work on 12-hour rotating shifts. Crews and contractors in District 9 have more than 75 snow plows and nearly 18,000 tons of salt stockpiled to fight snow and ice.
Travel is not advised, but motorists who must be out are advised to slow down, buckle up and maintain a “space cushion” – a safe distance of at least 500 feet between vehicles. Motorists also are cautioned to give a wide berth to snow plows and other heavy highway equipment.
Motorists also are advised to pack an emergency kit – blankets, water, food and flashlight. It also is advisable to have a shovel and a source of grit – sand, cat litter or something similar – in the event of a vehicle getting stuck.
