Watch for traffic changes

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (Sept. 12, 2014) – Contractors will begin resurfacing nine miles of KY 11 in Mason County next week – one of several Transportation Cabinet highway improvement projects now scheduled across northeast Kentucky.

Work is expected to start Wednesday, Sept. 17, on KY 11 in Maysville between the KY 1448 intersection and its junction with US 62 downtown. Eaton Asphalt Paving Co. Inc. was awarded a $1.55 million contract to mill up old asphalt and replace it with new blacktop on that three-mile section of KY 11, as well as six miles of the highway from the Fleming County line north to the KY 419 intersection.

During work, traffic on KY 11 will be one lane controlled by flaggers. Motorists should expect delays, especially during peak travel times, and watch message boards for traffic information.

Elsewhere in Kentucky Department of Highways District 9, motorists should watch for the following road work and traffic impacts:

-        Work is continuing along KY 57 north of downtown Flemingsburg in the Sleepy Run area to remove a hillside and straighten the highway’s connection to the new Flemingsburg bypass. Traffic could be shifted this week, the week of Sept. 15, onto a temporary route east of the existing highway, so that work can shift to the west side. Message boards and signs will mark traffic changes.

-        Also in Fleming County, work is continuing along a mile and a half of Beechburg-Wallingford Road (KY 3301), which has been restricted to light, local traffic only from the 3.4 to 5 mile markers, which is between the turn at Beechburg and a half mile past the Colgan Road intersection on the KY 559 (Wallingford) end. Heavy traffic such as log trucks, commercial vehicles, metal-wheeled carriages and other traffic should detour using KY 57 and KY 559.

-        In Lewis County, highway crews will close KY 1306 at the 4.9 mile marker between Kilbreth and Skidmore lanes on Tuesday, Sept. 16, to replace a drainage pipe. The closure will take place 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is not expected to impact school bus traffic.

-        In Bath County, contractors are working on I-64 east of the US 60 Owingsville exit between the 123 and 129 mile markers. Traffic is one lane, and the speed limit is reduced to 55 miles per hour.

-        In Carter County, work is taking place on I-64 from mile markers 166 to 172, which is between the Gregoryville-Fultz Road overpass and the Grayson exit. Traffic is one lane, and the speed limit is reduced to 55 miles per hour.

-        In Elliott County, work is continuing on a $26.5 million project to rebuild five miles of KY 7 from just north of KY 706 to the Elliott-Carter county line. Contractors are working to finish excavation at Hilltop and in other areas close to the existing highway so it can be repaired before winter. That work has required intermittent road closures, which will continue for the next several weeks. Motorists should expect rough pavement until repairs are complete.

-        In Greenup County, contractors expect to begin repairs Monday, Sept. 15, on KY 8-US 23 Truck Route near South Portsmouth. Patching and diamond grinding, or smoothing, of 1.3 miles of the four-lane highway’s concrete pavement will take place between the Ohio River bridges leading to Portsmouth. One lane traffic, day and night, through Oct. 15.

-        In Rowan County, contractors have started a $907,000 replacement of the KY 32 Seas Branch bridge. Work currently involves moving utility lines to build a traffic diversion route for use during construction. Traffic impacts are expected in the next two to three weeks on KY 32 approximately 3.5 miles west of the KY 504 intersection.

-        In downtown Ashland, nighttime paving and concrete sidewalk repairs are continuing along two miles of Greenup Avenue (US 23) from the 7th Street-Winchester Avenue split north of downtown to the 32nd Street-Winchester split south. Work should finish by the end of the week, but lane closures remain possible nightly, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., as well as some possible daytime work zones. Paving work is not expected to start until later this month – after the Poage Landing Days festival.
