Cabinet kicks off $4.7 million I-64 improvement in Bath County
One-lane traffic Tuesday from mile marker 123 to 129

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. (Aug. 29, 2014) – Contractors will begin $4.7 million of Kentucky Transportation Cabinet improvements next week on nearly six miles of Interstate 64 in Bath County.

The work includes new blacktop across all four lanes of I-64 from the US 60 interchange at Owingsville to just west of the KY 211 overpass, as well as ditch repairs, slide corrections, drainage improvements and other maintenance. When finished, the project will provide travelers with a smoother ride and lengthen the highway’s lifespan.

Contractors expect to begin travel restrictions Tuesday, Sept. 2, with one-lane traffic between the 123 and 129 mile markers. Lane closures will continue until late October or early November, with the speed limit reduced to 55 miles per hour in the work zone. A 12-foot clear lane width will be maintained, although provisions will be made for wide loads up to 16 feet. Motorists should watch for occasional lane shifts during the project.

The work is being done under a Transportation Cabinet low-bid contract totaling $4,655,365.47 awarded to The Walker Company of Kentucky Inc.

Road work schedules are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Motorists are asked to heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones – speeding fines are doubled when workers are present – and remain aware of construction equipment on roadways when traveling.
