New connection provides safer route for pedestrians and bicyclists beneath Newtown Pike
LEXINGTON, KY (Sept. 24, 2026) – A major milestone in the Newtown Pike (KY 922) Widening Project will be reached Friday, September 25, when the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) opens the new Legacy Trail underpass beneath Newtown Pike near Citation Boulevard.
Part of the project’s planned 1,200 feet of new trail connecting Newtown Court to Legacy Trail, the underpass provides a safer, separated connection for pedestrians and bicyclists by allowing trail users to travel beneath Newtown Pike without crossing roadway traffic. The opening represents an important step toward improving safety and connectivity along the Legacy Trail while construction continues on the larger widening project.
“This is an exciting milestone for the project and for everyone who enjoys the Legacy Trail,” said Kelly Baker,chief district engineer for KYTC District 7. “The new underpass provides a safer, more convenient connection for pedestrians and bicyclists by separating trail users from roadway traffic. We’re pleased to open this important improvement to the public as work continues on the Newtown Pike corridor.”
With the underpass opening, pedestrians and bicyclists using the Legacy Trail will be directed through the new connection rather than the existing at-grade crossing at Newtown Pike. The at-grade crossing at Citation will temporarily close to pedestrian traffic to allow crews to complete the remaining roadway improvements.
Friday, September 25
● On Friday morning, the new Legacy Trail underpass beneath Newtown Pike will open.
● After its opening, the existing at-grade crossing at Newtown Pike at Citation Boulevard will temporarily close to pedestrian traffic. This will allow crews to safely complete the remaining roadway improvements.
● During this transition, pedestrians will be directed through the newly completed Legacy Trail underpass to travel between Newtown Pike.
● Trail users should follow posted signage and use the designated route through the underpass.
This work is part of the Newtown Pike (KY 922) widening project. When complete in 2027, this project will add a lane in each direction on Newtown Pike (KY 922) from New Circle Road (KY 4) to I-75, improving safety and traffic flow by increasing capacity to handle current and future traffic volumes. All work/closures are scheduled on a tentative basis, and subject to change depending on weather conditions, emergencies and other factors beyond the control of the Department of Highways.
District 7 includes: Anderson, Bourbon, Boyle, Clark, Fayette, Garrard, Jessamine, Madison, Mercer, Montgomery, Scott and Woodford Counties.
