TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Overnight Closures and Lane Restrictions Planned on Main Street and Clark Memorial Bridge in Downtown Louisville

Paving operations as part of the Main Remade project to begin as work progresses toward completion of the East Phase

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 12, 2026) The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of upcoming overnight traffic restrictions on Main Street in downtown Louisville, including a temporary overnight closure of the Clark Memorial Bridge (Second Street Bridge), beginning this week.

The following traffic impacts are related to milling and paving activities as part of the East Phase of the Main Remade project (from Wenzel Street to Second Street):

  • Beginning at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13, through evening hours on Thursday, May 21
    • The left two lanes of Main Street will be closed from Wenzel Street to 2nd Street
  • Beginning at 8 p.m. on Monday, May 18, through 6 a.m. on Tuesday, May 19
    • Main Street will be closed at 1st Street and the Clark Memorial Bridge (Second Street Bridge), limiting access to and from the Clark Memorial Bridge (Second Street Bridge)
  • Beginning at 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, through evening hours on Thursday, May 28
    • The right two lanes of Main Street will be closed from Wenzel Street to 2nd Street

Paving operations during the above lane closures will occur during overnight hours (8 p.m. to 6 a.m.) and other work operations will occur during daytime hours.
As announced on May 1, the right lane of Second Street at U.S. 31W (West Main Street), along with the left through/turn lane on U.S. 31W (West Main Street) at Second Street is closed and will remain closed through project completion and the upcoming conversion of Main Street from one-way to two-way traffic.

The Main Remade project is a multi-phase effort designed to improve safety and accessibility along a key downtown corridor. The East Phase, currently underway, includes the conversion of West Main Street between Wenzel Street and Second Street to two-way traffic, along with upgrades to crosswalks and intersections, installation of a protected bike lane, and the addition of dedicated turn lanes and new traffic signals.

As contract crews continue advancing toward the anticipated full two-way conversion of Main Street in late June, additional project updates and traffic details will be shared as schedules are finalized. Drivers are encouraged to follow posted signage, remain alert in work zones, and allow extra travel time while work is
underway.

The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. For the latest traffic and travel updates across the Commonwealth of Kentucky, visit goky.ky.gov. Information specific to District 5 counties is also available on Facebook and X.
