KYTC District 1 Winter Storm Update: Jan. 27, 2026, 5:00 p.m.
Snow melt aids plowing operations across district
PADUCAH, Ky. (Jan. 27, 2026) – District 1 snowfighters received welcome assistance from some sunshine today as crews continued clearing snow and ice from state highways.
Significant progress was made on main, or A, routes as warmer pavement allowed salt to activate and snowpack to melt, making plowing more effective. Motorists are urged to use caution at intersections and medians, where slushy conditions remain.
Traffic on interstates and parkways was moving at or near posted speeds; however, drivers should remain alert where shoulders have not yet been plowed.
Crews continued plowing and treating secondary and rural roadways, known as B and C routes, where conditions vary by county. In counties that saw heavier ice accumulations during this winter storm, including Calloway and Trigg, some roads may remain snow-covered and frozen. Road graders have been deployed to help break up the ice and push heavier snow off the roadway, especially in shaded areas where conditions are most difficult.
Total clearing of snow and ice may still take several days due to cold temperatures, and roads could refreeze each night. Western Kentucky is not expected to reach above-freezing temperatures until early next week.
Until roads are fully clear, drivers should reduce speed, increase following distance, and remain alert for slick spots, including on bridges, overpasses, and in shaded areas.
Plowing operations will continue until dark today. Contract graders will work overnight on select B and C routes, with full snow and ice operations resuming Wednesday morning.
Motorists are urged to maintain a safe distance from snow plows and heavy highway equipment and to never pass plows on the shoulder.
