KYTC District 1 Winter Storm Update:
Jan. 25, 2026, 4:30 p.m.

Crews make progress Sunday as precipitation tapers at end of Day 2

PADUCAH, Ky. (Jan. 25, 2026) Snowfighters continued making progress on state-maintained highways Sunday as precipitation tapered off at the end of the second day of a winter storm impacting all District 1 counties.

Teams have been operating around the clock since early Saturday morning. Moderate to heavy snowfall on Saturday transitioned overnight into a sleet and snow mix, creating slick conditions and difficult travel during the Sunday morning hours. In most counties, sleet changed back to snow by mid-day, and all precipitation was expected to end across western Kentucky by 6 p.m.

To keep traffic moving, plow operators initially focused efforts on interstates, parkways, and main highways in each county. As snowfall rates decreased throughout the day, crews gradually shifted resources to additional routes.

By early Sunday afternoon, interstates and parkways were passable, allowing crews to begin plowing A and B priority routes. Livingston, Lyon, Marshall, and McCracken counties also deployed road graders on select secondary routes to push heavier accumulations of snow and sleet off roadways and to break up ice, helping prevent compaction.

The National Weather Service reported 8.2 inches of combined snow and sleet had fallen in Paducah as of 3 p.m. Sunday. As the snow moves out, dangerously cold temperatures are expected to persist well into the week, with wind chills forecast between -3 and -11 degrees from midnight Sunday through noon Monday.

Motorists are urged to avoid non-essential travel. Plunging temperatures overnight and into early Monday may cause roadways to refreeze and create hazardous driving conditions.

If travel cannot be avoided, motorists should slow down, increase following distance, and keep an emergency kit in their vehicle.

The District 1 Snow and Ice team will continue to monitor road conditions and adjust response strategies as needed.
