KYTC Crews Focus on Keeping Primary Routes Open as Ice Impacts District 2
Winter Storm Enters Day 2
MADISONVILLE, Ky. (January 25, 2026) – Winter storm operations across Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 2 entered Day 2 this morning as weather conditions shifted from snow to sleet and freezing rain across much of the region. Most roadways remain snow covered, and icy conditions are developing, particularly in southern portions of the district.
With hazardous conditions continuing, KYTC crews are prioritizing primary A routes, including interstates and parkways, to keep the most highly traveled roadways open and passable for emergency response, freight movement, and essential travel.
In Christian County, where crews are experiencing heavier icing and freezing rain, all available plows were reassigned to Interstate 24 early this morning to break up ice and clear the roadway. This focused effort is aimed at maintaining safe travel on the interstate as conditions continue to deteriorate.
Some crews in District 2 have also deployed road graders as part of winter storm operations in an effort to stay ahead of the ongoing precipitation. Graders are being used to push heavier accumulations of snow and sleet off roadways, as well as to break up ice, helping prevent compaction and allowing plows and treatment materials to be more effective as wintry precipitation continues to fall.
Crews across all 11 counties of District 2 are working to make as much progress as possible on state-maintained routes today while temperatures hover near 20 degrees. Forecasts call for temperatures to drop to near zero overnight, which will significantly reduce the effectiveness of snow and ice removal efforts and make road conditions more difficult to improve.
Motorists are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and to use extreme caution if travel is unavoidable. Drivers should expect slick, snow- and ice-covered roads, especially on bridges, overpasses, and elevated surfaces, which freeze more quickly than pavement.
KYTC reminds motorists to give snow plows plenty of room to operate safely. Plows may be traveling at reduced speeds and making frequent stops as they work to clear and treat roadways.
Conditions will remain challenging through the night and into tomorrow. Drivers are encouraged to monitor local forecasts, check road conditions before traveling, and keep an emergency kit in their vehicle when winter weather is present.
