New Roadway Weather Information System cameras installed in District 10
Devices offer views of highway conditions in five counties
JACKSON, Ky. – For years, television stations have shown the traffic camera on the Mountain Parkway in Wolfe County anytime they wanted to give viewers a glimpse of road conditions in eastern Kentucky during winter weather.
Now, five more cameras are available in the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Department of Highways District 10 for the general public as well as broadcasters to give motorists an up-to-date view of more roads across the district.
These Roadway Weather Information System (RWIS) devices not only show still images, but display air and pavement temperatures as well as the dewpoint and heat index at each location. The compact, solar-powered devices are installed on existing infrastructure, such as light poles and traffic signals, to help KYTC officials monitor pavement conditions and make road-clearing decisions.
The five RWIS cameras located in District 10 are installed at these locations:
- Breathitt -- The intersection of KY 15 and KY 30 in Jackson at the end of the four-lane KY 15 segment.
- Lee -- The intersection of KY 11 and KY 52 in Beattyville at the end of the North Fork of the Kentucky River Bridge.
- Magoffin -- The Mountain Parkway just west of Exit 75 near Salyersville.
- Perry -- The intersection of KY 15 and Business KY 15 in Hazard at the northern end of the Hazard bypass.
- Powell -- The Mountain Parkway just east of Exit 33 at Slade.
To view the cameras, visit GoKY.ky.gov and select "Roadway WX" from the menu on the left to highlight the locations of the cameras on the map, shown as a sun and cloud icon. Click each icon to view the individual camera and the weather data from each station.
The traffic camera on the Mountain Parkway near the top of Slade Hill in Wolfe County remains visible on GoKY.ky.gov, although no weather data is transmitted from that location. To access it, make sure "Traffic Cam" is selected from the menu on the left, then click the camera icon to view the most recent imagery.
