Delays planned Friday, Sept. 19, at bridge replacement project on KY 52 at Estill-Madison county line

Traffic to be switched to completed half of new span

JACKSON, Ky.  Drivers who use KY 52 at the Estill-Madison county line, which is currently reduced to one lane due to a bridge replacement project, should prepare for additional delays on Friday, Sept. 19.

Traffic will be switched to the completed side of the new span (the eastbound lane) so work can begin on the other side of the bridge. Delays are likely as traffic control devices are relocated to funnel traffic from the westbound lane into the eastbound lane. The setup will continue as it currently exists (one lane controlled by traffic signals); only traffic will be switched from one side of the bridge to the other.

The bridge over Drowning Creek, built in 1957 and used by more than 8,200 vehicles per day, is being replaced with a modern structure.

A queue warning system is in place to alert drivers to the presence of slowed or stopped traffic at the bridge. The system consists of a series of sensors and variable message boards. The content of the message boards changes automatically based on the information provided by the sensors.

Drivers should slow down and pay attention to signage as they approach the bridge. Long, steep hills are present on either side of Drowning Creek, so motorists should keep their speed in check and be alert to changing road and travel conditions.

The existing bridge is rated in poor condition and has posted weight limits of between 39 and 60 tons, depending on the vehicle type. It is located at milepoint 0.0 in Estill County and milepoint 22.6 in Madison County.

The project is scheduled for completion by Nov. 15.
