TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Extended Lane Closures on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge in Louisville
Work advancing on bridge joint replacement project
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (July 28, 2025) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of lane closures on Interstate 65 South on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge in Louisville as part of work for the project to replace the bridge’s expansion joints.
The right three lanes and right shoulder of the bridge carrying I-65 South over the Ohio River will remain closed through the end of 2025 for ongoing construction activities. While lane closures span the entire length of the bridge, access to I-64 and I-71 will be maintained throughout the duration of the work.
Additionally, beginning at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, July 29, and continuing until 3 p.m., contract crews will install barrier walls on the bridge. This operation will require a temporary closure of the right four lanes. Two through lanes will remain open during the installation, and drivers will continue to have access to I-64 and I-71. Motorists should heed signage, use caution, and expect delays.
Expansion joints are a component of the bridge deck, or travel surface, that allows for thermal expansion and contraction due to changes in weather to prevent concrete from cracking and to preserve the structural integrity of the bridge.
Earlier this year, the left three lanes were closed in February as a necessary safety precaution due to damaged expansion joints on the Indiana approach. During preliminary work on the long-planned expansion joint replacement project, contractors were able to make temporary repairs to the damaged joint, and the left three lanes reopened in early April.
Hall Contracting of Kentucky Inc. is carrying out the joint replacement project under a $6.9 million contract. The project is expected to be completed by April 2026, with intermittent lane closures to be anticipated throughout the duration of construction. KYTC will provide additional details on future lane closures and traffic impacts as they become available.
The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.
