U.S. 60 to be Blocked at Carter Road on Wednesday
Bridge repairs underway
MADISONVILLE, Ky. (July 21, 2025) – A contractor working for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to block the U.S. 60 Wendell Ford Expressway in Owensboro on Wednesday, July 23 at around 8 a.m. to begin working on the damaged bridge beam.
Closure of the roadway is needed during this work to ensure that potential falling debris is not a hazard to motorists. Traffic in both directions will be detoured off of U.S. 60 via the Carter Road exit ramps. Personnel will be flagging traffic at the intersection of U.S. 60 and Carter Road in both directions. From there motorists can take the on-ramp to return to the expressway on the opposite side of the bridge.
The blockage will last most of the day, and could close again on Thursday, July 24 if needed.
Work is being carried out to repair damaged sustained in June 2024 from a vehicle striking the bridge. Due to the structure of the bridge, the replacement beam had to be specifically designed and fabricated to fit the needs of the structure, resulting in a lengthy delay before repairs could be started.

(Original release)
MADISONVILLE, Ky. (July 16, 2025) – More than a year after being struck and damaged by a commercial vehicle, repairs on the Carter Road bridge over U.S. 60 in Owensboro are scheduled to begin next week. This work will require traffic restrictions on both U.S. 60 and Carter Road.
On June 7, 2024 the Carter Road (KY 2698) bridge over the U.S. 60 Wendell Ford Expressway was struck by a vehicle, damaging one of the bridge's support beams. Inspection of the structure found that the bridge could be reopened until repairs could be made, with lane restrictions in place along the shoulder of the bridge. Due to the type of damage, a quick fix was not possible, with the damaged beam having to be specifically designed and fabricated to match the structural needs of the bridge.
Crews will begin placing signage for the upcoming work tomorrow, Thursday, July 17. Construction is set to begin on Monday, July 21.
During construction, westbound U.S. 60 will be reduced to one lane from the 13 mm to 12.3 mm. There will also be additional lane restrictions on the northbound side of the Carter Road Bridge.
When necessary during construction, both east and westbound lanes of U.S. 60 could be temporarily be blocked from the 12.3-13 mm. During those blockages, traffic in both directions will be diverted down the off ramp to Carter Road and then back onto U.S. 60 via the adjacent on-ramp. When traffic is detoured, personnel will be flagging the intersection between the on-ramps to keep traffic flowing.
Repairs to the bridge are slated to be completed by mid-September.
