Flagging on Owensboro's "Blue Bridge" Extended Through Friday

Bridge Should Reopen by Friday Afternoon

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (June 11, 2025) Flagging operations on the Glover Cary Bridge in Owensboro, scheduled to conclude tomorrow, will be extended to Friday. The bridge should be fully reopened by Friday night.

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (June 9, 2025)  Three days of one-lane traffic on the Glover Cary Bridge in Owensboro that was scheduled to begin today was delayed due to inclement weather.

The contractor plans to begin lane restrictions on Tuesday, June 10, with one-lane conditions last through Thursday, June 12. One lane of KY 2262 across the bridge will remain open during this phase of work, with flaggers directing alternating one-lane traffic.

As announced last week, "The Blue Bridge" in Downtown Owensboro is scheduled to close for up to 90 days this summer, beginning after the July 4th holiday weekend. That project will replace the aging bridge deck, make concrete repairs and repair bridge joints. While the entire project is slated to last through November, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is limiting the actual bridge closure to 90 days or less. That schedule would have the bridge reopened around the first of October.

During construction, crews will be fully replacing one 750-foot long span of concrete-filled bridge decking while making repairs to a second span of the same length. As the decking spans the entire width of the bridge surface, closing one lane at a time is impossible, which required a bridge closure.

The temporary closure also allows long-term concrete maintenance to be completed, rather than short-term repairs, helping to keep the bridge safe and open for many years to come.
