TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Lane Closures on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge in Louisville
Preliminary work continues on project to replace expansion joints
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (June 3, 2025) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of lane closures on Interstate 65 South on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge in Louisville as part of preliminary work for the project to replace the bridge’s expansion joints.
Currently, the left lane and left shoulder of the bridge, which carries I-65 South over the Ohio River, are closed. Additional lane closures are to be anticipated during the early stages of the project to allow contractors to install a working platform beneath the bridge to safely perform upcoming repairs.
Full construction is scheduled to begin in mid-July, when newly fabricated expansion joints are expected to arrive. Expansion joints are a component of the bridge deck, or travel surface, that allows for thermal expansion and contraction due to changes in weather to prevent concrete from cracking and to preserve the structural integrity of the bridge.
Earlier this year, the left three lanes were closed in February as a necessary safety precaution due to damaged expansion joints on the Indiana approach. During preliminary work on the long-planned expansion joint replacement project, contractors were able to make temporary repairs to the damaged joint, and the left three lanes reopened in early April.
Hall Contracting of Kentucky Inc. is carrying out the joint replacement project under a $6.9 million contract. The project is expected to be completed by April 2026, with intermittent lane closures to be anticipated throughout the duration of construction. KYTC will provide additional details on future lane closures and traffic impacts as they become available.
