UPDATE: Geotech Drilling Continues Near U.S. 51 Ohio River “Cairo” Bridge
Crews plan to shift to the Kentucky side of the bridge later today
PADUCAH, Ky. (May 14, 2025) – Geotechnical drilling work near the U.S. 51 Ohio River “Cairo” Bridge, which connects Cairo, IL, and Wickliffe, KY, is ongoing this week.
Later this afternoon, the contractor expects to shift work to the Kentucky side of the bridge.
Drilling will take place at multiple locations both on and off the roadway. Motorists are advised to stay alert and reduce their speed when entering the work zone.
When drilling operations are on the roadway near traffic flow, signage, flaggers and trucks with arrow boards will direct motorists to shift into the open lane.

PADUCAH, Ky. (May 1, 2025) – A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) will begin geotechnical drilling near the U.S. 51 Ohio River “Cairo” Bridge between Cairo, IL, and Wickliffe, KY, on Tuesday, May 6, starting on the Illinois side.
This is part of preliminary work for the U.S. 51 Bridge Replacement Project and will help engineers better understand soil and settlement conditions where new piers and on-land abutments are planned.
Crews will perform drilling operations both on and off the highway in multiple locations. Work on the Illinois side is expected to continue through approximately May 16 before moving to the Kentucky side.
When personnel and equipment are on the roadway near traffic flow, flaggers and trucks with arrow boards will be present to help guide motorists to shift into the open lane. Stay alert and reduce speed in the work zone.
