Crews to perform routine inspection of Cochran Hill Tunnel
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (May 1, 2025) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of the upcoming overnight closures of a section of Interstate 64 beginning Wednesday, May 7, in Jefferson County.
The interstate will be closed for two nights for the routine inspection of the Cochran Hill Tunnel (mile marker 8.4). KYTC engineers will perform the biennial in-depth inspection of various tunnel components. During both closures, crews will also perform routine maintenance, sweeping, and patching in the vicinity.
I-64 West will be closed from 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, through 6 a.m. on Thursday, May 8. Motorists traveling on I-64 West should follow the suggested detour via I-264 East to I-71 South to reconnect to I-64 West.
Inspection at the I-64 East bore of the tunnel will begin at 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 8, and continue through 6 a.m. Friday, May 9. Motorists traveling on I-64 East should follow the suggested detour via I-71 North to I-264 West to reconnect to I-64 East. Motorists should heed signage, use caution, and expect travel delays.
The Cochran Hill Tunnels were constructed in 1970. In 2021, they underwent an LED lighting upgrade. In 2023, they were part of a larger I-64 rehabilitation project.
The date and duration of this work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.
