Bridge Replacement Project Planned on U.S. 431 West of Owensboro
One lane traffic expected through November
MADISONVILLE, Ky. (April 16, 2025) – Motorists who travel U.S. 431 on the west side of Owensboro can expect some traffic delays over the next 6-8 months as a contractor working for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet begins a project to replace an 83 year-old bridge over Panther Creek at the community of Petit.
There will be temporary lane restrictions in place at the bridge on Thursday, April 17 as the contractor begins installation of an arm on the crane that will be utilized during the construction process. Flaggers will be in place during this work to direct traffic safely across the bridge while this work is conducted.
Demolition and construction is scheduled to begin within the next two weeks, although the exact start date is on hold due to flood waters in the project area. Both lanes of U.S. 431 will reopen after tomorrow's work and will remain open until the next phase of the project begins.
Once work begins, the bridge will be reduced to one lane for the duration of the project, with a maximum 11-feet clearance. Crews will remove on side of the bridge and replace it, while traffic is allowed through on the other side of the bridge. Traffic flow will be directed by temporary automatic traffic signals.
Demolition and construction of each side of the bridge is expected to last 60 to 90 days, with a final completion set for the end of November.
More than 10,000 vehicles pass along the U.S. 431 corridor into Owensboro each day.
