Work Beginning on Leitchfield Bypass Project
The new route improves safety and efficiency on the west side of the city
ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (March 6, 2025) – Construction is beginning on a new section of the Leitchfield Bypass, connecting KY 259 near the Western Kentucky Parkway Interchange to US 62 and KY 54 on the northwest side of the city. Multiple alternates for the alignment were presented during an August 2018 public meeting in Leitchfield. The chosen design utilizes the best overall fit for cost, constructability, public feedback, right of way impacts to landowners (including utility and railroad interests) and for addressing current and future transportation needs. The project was awarded January 29th in the amount of $22.77 Million to Scotty's Contracting and Stone, LLC.
Improving safety and efficiency, the bypass extension to the west side of town will allow better access to locations along US 62 and KY 54. The new road also gives trucks a better option from the parkway, helping relieve commercial vehicles routing through downtown. The project includes safer intersection designs with a bridge for P&L Railway track over the bypass and a roundabout at US 62, which upon completion will outfit both bypass sides of US 62 (west and east sides of town) with roundabouts, in conjunction with a separate upcoming project to convert the eastern side intersection.
No immediate impacts to traffic will take place. Initial work over the next few weeks includes installation of construction signage on intersecting routes, along with excavation and ground clearing on the section between KY 54 and the railroad. Construction will be phased over the next two years with an estimated completion by the end of 2026. Updates to the project throughout construction will be provided to local media outlets and posted on @KYTCdistrict4 social media.
