TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Interstate 64 Lane Closures and Traffic Shifts Beginning Next Week
Work advancing on the $118 million widening and improvement project
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (March 7, 2025) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises motorists of upcoming lane closures and traffic shifts on Interstate 64 as construction progresses on the $118 million widening and improvement project in Shelby County. Lane closures will begin Tuesday, March 11, as crews begin major work on the widening phase.
To prepare for traffic shifts, shoulder milling operations will begin next week. This work includes removing the outside shoulder rumble strips and replacing them with asphalt to allow traffic to shift onto the outside shoulder.
Beginning Tuesday, March 11, I-64 East and West will be reduced to one lane nightly from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. between mile point 31.0 (near KY 55) and the Shelbyville Weigh Station near KY 1790 (Hooper Station Road) at mile point 38.3. During daytime hours, two 11-foot lanes will remain open in each direction.
Major traffic shifts are expected to occur on or after Tuesday, March 25, for the installation of barrier walls. Following the installation of barrier walls, traffic will be shifted to the outside shoulders, with two lanes remaining open in each direction.
Drivers should use caution, reduce speed in work zones, and watch for signage and lane shifts. Delays are possible, especially during peak travel times.
