District 5 Snowfighters Ready for Incoming Winter Storm
Motorists advised to exercise caution as snow moves into the region
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Feb. 18, 2025) – Snowfighters with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 5 and contract teams across all eight counties are prepared for another round of winter weather expected to impact the region tonight.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Louisville forecasts snowfall of three to six inches, expected to begin between 6 and 9 p.m. and continue through Wednesday morning. Frigid temperatures will follow snowfall, dipping into the low teens and single digits on Thursday and Friday.
District 5 snowfighters and contract crews will work throughout the night to clear snow from the roads, and the Snow & Ice Team will monitor weather conditions hourly to adjust response strategies as needed.
Motorists should consider limiting travel to give crews room to work. If you can’t limit travel, remember flooded roads will impact snowplow routes. Flooded roads could also freeze and become snow-covered, creating an unexpected hazard.
Several routes in District 5 remain closed due to high water, which may affect snow and ice response times. Crews will adjust their routes in these areas, with trucks potentially needing to detour or double back to reach areas beyond the closures. As a result, route coverage and response timing may be modified accordingly. Drivers should be aware of continued flooding and never drive through high water, pack an emergency car kit, and take it slow.
KYTC maintains most roads, streets, and bridges that are part of the State Highway System, including interstates, parkways, and U.S. route designations (in Jefferson County, KYTC is only responsible for the interstates). KYTC operates on a four-tier priority system to keep people and commerce moving efficiently.
The Cabinet’s snow and ice information website, snowky.ky.gov, details priority routes, helpful winter weather tips, fact sheets, and videos on salt application and snow removal. Motorists are advised to exercise caution, reduce speeds, and allow extra travel time if traveling during winter weather. Remember to provide plenty of room for snowplows and other equipment.
