Travel discouraged overnight due to inclement weather

High water, mudslides reported across District 10

JACKSON, Ky.  Travel is discouraged overnight across the 10 counties in the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Department of Highways District 10 in east-central and southeastern Kentucky due to the heavy rain that occurred earlier in the day, with more rain expected overnight.

Motorists should stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary due to the number of high water closures reported. In addition, at least one road (KY 267 at milepoint 5.5 in Perry County) is blocked due to a mudslide.

Drivers are reminded to never drive through a flooded roadway. Rushing water can carry a vehicle away, and the pavement could be undermined in areas where water covers the road. In addition, visibility is diminished in the dark, making it difficult to determine the depth of the water or the swiftness of the current.

As runoff from creeks upstream reaches the rivers, more flooding will occur. Drivers should not drive past "Road Closed" signs in areas where KYTC personnel have placed barricades.

The latest road condition updates are posted on KYTC District 10's Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) pages. Follow these social media outlets for the most recent status updates.

District 10 includes Breathitt, Estill, Lee, Magoffin, Menifee, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Powell, and Wolfe counties.
