KYTC D-2 Crews Prepped for Potential Snowfall

Winter driving tips

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (Feb. 10, 2025) Kentucky Transportation Cabinet personnel in all eleven District 2 counties began pretreating primary routes, interstates and bridges this morning in preparation for potential snowfall predicted by the National Weather Service.

With the highest chances for snowfall in the northern end of the district, those counties will have snow and ice crews on duty tonight to begin addressing roadways if necessary. Crews in all other counties will be on standby to report if road conditions change in their areas.

KYTC will continue to monitor national weather service reports as the system continues to develop as it moves into western Kentucky.

If the area does get snowfall, motorists are asked to follow these winter driving tips to stay safe:

Driving Tips

o   When snow and/or ice are on roadways, drive slowly no matter what type of vehicle you drive. It takes more time and distance to stop your vehicle in adverse weather conditions, so break early and slowly.

o   Pay attention to weather advisories. Weather will impact your commute on some level.

o   Slow down when approaching intersections, off-ramps, bridges, or shaded areas. These are all candidates for developing black ice—a thin coating of clear ice that can form on the pavement surface that may be difficult to see.

o   Travel only as necessary during major snow events. It’s better to be stranded at home than on the road.

o   Maintain a safe distance from snowplows and other heavy highway equipment.

o   Do not pass snowplows on the shoulder.

o   Allow more time to travel for routine commutes.

o   Winterize vehicles. Have your car battery, tire pressure and brakes checked. Make sure your heater, defroster, headlights, and windshield wipers are working properly.

o   Stock vehicles with ice scraper, jumper cables, blankets, flashlight, cell phone charger, non-perishable snacks and first aid kit.
