KYTC District 1 Winter Weather Update
for Jan. 10, 2025 at 5:30 a.m.

Crews are patrolling, treating roadways as needed as light snow falls

PADUCAH, Ky. (Jan. 10, 2025, 5:30 a.m.) Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 1 crews are out patrolling state highways early Friday morning. Light snow started to fall at about 4:30 a.m. in Fulton, Graves and Hickman counties, followed by Ballard, Carlisle and Crittenden.

Crews are reporting this morning in staggered start times based on forecasted snow arrival times and will work in shifts throughout the winter weather event.

As snow falls and sticks to roadways, bridges and other potential trouble spots, crews will begin treating as needed.

All counties in District 1 are under a National Weather Service Winter Storm Warning. The forecast indicates snowfall amounts are likely to be heavier to the south, but Western Kentucky is expected to see accumulating snow ranging from 4 to 8 inches. Travel impacts are anticipated Friday morning through Friday evening.

The KYTC District 1 Snow & Ice Team will be actively monitoring weather conditions hour by hour and will adjust response strategies for area highway crews as needed.

Safe Driving Tips for Snow and Ice

KYTC encourages motorists to prepare for winter and remain safe by following these tips:

Travel only as necessary during major winter weather events. Stock vehicles with ice scrapers, jumper cables, blankets, a flashlight, cell phone charger, non-perishable snacks and first aid kit should you get stranded on the road.

Winterize vehicles. Have your car battery, tire pressure and tire tread checked. Make sure your heater, defroster, headlights, and windshield wipers are working properly.

When snow and/or ice accumulate on roadways, drive slowly no matter what type of vehicle you’re in. It takes more time and distance to stop your vehicle in poor weather conditions, so brake early and slowly.

Pay attention to weather advisories and allow additional travel time to reach your destination.

Slow down when approaching intersections, off-ramps, bridges, or shaded areas. These are all candidates for developing black ice — a thin coating of clear ice that can form on the pavement surface that may be difficult to see.

Maintain a safe distance from snowplows and other heavy highway equipment and do not pass snowplows on the shoulder.

Know before you go. Download the free WAZE app or visit goky.ky.gov to check traffic conditions before you travel. The map also offers access to select traffic cameras on interstates and parkways.

While driving, eliminate distractions such as eating or using a phone.

Abide by Kentucky’s Quick Clearance law: Move vehicles to the shoulder in the event of a non-injury crash.
