U.S. 45 Ohio River 'Brookport' Bridge in Paducah To Close at 7 P.M. Ahead of Forecasted Winter Storm

KSP to begin removing abandoned vehicles from major roadways

PADUCAH, Ky. (Jan. 4, 2025)  As a safety precaution, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is planning to close the U.S. 45 Ohio River "Brookport" Bridge in Paducah promptly at 7 p.m. tonight, Jan. 4, in anticipation of severe winter weather.

The Brookport Bridge has a metal grated deck that cools down quickly when temperatures drop and allows ice to form on the steel.

Motorists should detour via the Interstate 24 Ohio River Bridge.

KYTC D1 will provide timely updates when the bridge reopens.

Also, the Kentucky State Police (KSP) has advised they will begin efforts to remove abandoned vehicles along the right-of-way of major highways across Western Kentucky to promote the safety of the traveling public and to keep them from becoming an obstacle during snow and ice clearing operations.

The National Weather Service (NWS) is anticipating a winter storm with mixed precipitation types falling within in our region very early Sunday morning into Monday morning. A bitter cold, arctic blast will follow this storm throughout the rest of the week.

According to the NWS, much of Western Kentucky is under a Winter Weather Advisory with anticipated minor to moderate travel impacts starting early Sunday morning. A regional forecast breakdown shows an initial burst of freezing rain and sleet, changing to rain or possible snow in the District 1 counties of Ballard, Calloway, Carlisle, Fulton, Graves, Hickman, Lyon, Marshall, McCracken and Trigg.

Livingston and Crittenden the northernmost counties in District 1  are under an Ice Storm Warning with major travel impacts expected. Forecasts indicate counties in this area could receive between 0.25 to 0.75 inches of ice accumulation in addition to some snow.

KYTC strongly advises against unnecessary travel during this snow and ice event as driving conditions could become hazardous quickly under these conditions.
