Nighttime Work Planned on South Main Street in Madisonville
Work scheduled to last around two weeks
MADISONVILLE, Ky. (Dec. 4, 2024) – A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to begin a concrete patching project on U.S. 41 (South Main Street) in Madisonville, beginning Thursday, Dec. 5 that will result in nightly lane restrictions during early December.
The $300,000 project will repair damaged sections of concrete on the four-lane section of South Main Street from McCoy Avenue to the Earlington city limits. KYTC did repairs of the same kind on a small portion of South Main in 2023, and after seeing success, will continue repairs in 2024 to further improve the roadway.
All work on the project will be conducted at night when lane restrictions should have the least impact on traffic flow. Work is expected to last around two weeks, but inclement weather could cause delays.
This will be a mobile operation, with work zones and lane restrictions moving throughout the project. Motorists should watch for signage alerting them to the area that is currently under construction.
The six-year road plan includes upgrading South Main Street, but funding is not scheduled until at least 2029. The total cost of the upgrade will be around $20 million.
The project's lofty price tag is due largely to the design of the existing drainage system under South Main Street. Most roads are constructed with the center line being the highest point so that water runs to the stormwater drains along the shoulder. In its current configuration, parts of South Main Street slopes towards a drainage system placed beneath the center median. In order to meet current highway standards, the center drains will have to be removed and the lanes will need to be reconstructed to drain towards the shoulder.
